VOICE DISORDERS

Where Are the Vocal Cords?

The vocal cords are located in the front of the neck, inside the larynx (commonly called the “voice box”). The voice box sits above the windpipe and forms a framework made of cartilage.

Despite their name, the vocal cords are not string-like. They are two folds positioned opposite one another and resemble lips. These folds contain muscle and are covered by a moist, slippery mucous membrane, similar to the inner surface of the lips.

When we breathe, the vocal cords open to allow air to pass in and out. During speaking, laughing, and singing, they come together and vibrate as air from the lungs passes through, producing sound. The vocal cords also close during swallowing and coughing.
